HARVESTED October 20-31, 2011

BRAND’s vineyard blocks are located at an average elevation of 1350’ high above Lake Hennessey on Pritchard Hill. The well-drained rocky red volcanic soil and fortunate sun exposure above the cloud line contribute to an ultimate vineyard environment. Temperature variations are more moderate than at lower elevations leading to keen definition and intensity of flavors.

The 2011 growing season was long and cool with rain present in the spring during flowering and again in early October. Late season vineyards on the valley floor were challenged by high humidity. Significant positive factors existed at higher elevations however. The longer daylight hours and gentle breezes on Pritchard Hill resulted in clean clusters and normal, even ripening in 2011.

Grapes were sorted in the field and again in the winery prior to fermentation. Individual lots were fermented in small, jacketed stainless steel tanks with maceration lasting up to 31 days. Barrel aging occurred in 86% new French oak for 24 months and the wine and was bottled without fining and filtration.

The Wine Spectator — 94 points

Immense without being weighty, with dense earth and tobacco laced currant and dark berry notes, showing shades of espresso, dill, gravel pit and anise. Returns on the finish to a pure, rich aftertaste.

The Wine Advocate — 93-95 points

Mocha, plums, espresso and spices all flesh out in the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon. Rich, voluptuous an textured, the 2011 is firing on all cylinders. The 2011 is cool, inward and tightly wound, with a fabulous combination of fruit and structure. Grilled herbs, sweet tobacco and mint add complexity on the finish, all supported by sweet, silky tannins that are a hallmark of the house style.
